INFORMATION ABOUT SLATE

WHAT IS SLATE?

Slates are the foliated fine granular natural stones which low-grade metamorphism of shale or clay stones. Metamorphism realized as the result of high pressure occured from the collosion of tectonic plates. Foliation of slate stones are not happen from the stratification or the foliation of shale or clay stones; foliation event on slate stones happen perpendicular to high pressures which are forming metamorphism process.

Slate stones are formed with the exposure degree of metamorphism of clay or mica minerals which they consist. As the result of increase in the pressure and heat the minerals in the shale transform into mica minerals. Slate stones also consist high amount of quartz minerals and small amount of feldspar, calcite, pyrite and hematite minerals in their structure.

APPLICATION AREAS OF DIABASE

Slate stones are-nonporous and resistant to negative weather conditions and abrasion. They have durable structure for shrinking and bending. Un-slippery characteristic of slate stones make them ideal for slippery grounds. They are also irresponsive to temperature differences and frost. Today slate stones mostly prefered as cut-to-size or natural state in outdoor applications like aesthetic coating materials, window edges, thresholds and floorings.

  • There are various thickness production of slates; between 1cm–3cm thicknesses are mostly prefered for the spaces that do not load weight to the constructions like fireplaces and barbecues, interior and exterior wall cladding applications. 1 ton of 1cm–3cm thickness slate covers 15-18 m² surface.
  • 4cm–6cm thickness slate stones has to be prefered for the areas that do not affect by the weight that load on the surface like car access roads of the buildings, walking ways of parks and gardens, poolsides etc. 1 ton of 4cm–6cm thickness slate covers app. 9-12 m² surface.
  • Last thickness of slate stones are 6cm–10cm which is mostly prefered for the areas like stair applications, exterior wall claddings with joint concrete in order to prevent wear of the surface from hard impacts. 1 ton of 6cm–10cm thickness slate covers app. 5-6 m² surface.
  • SLATE COLOURS

Slates have various colours depending on structures of minerals that they contain. In nature slates can be find yellow, brown, grey, light green, off-white, claret red, red or multicolor.

    SLATE SURFACE TREATMENT

Slate stones are marketed as natural state; no surface treatment are made.
